In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
